Online Shop Limitations

This isn’t the perfect tool for e-commerce, but it’s extremely powerful for how simple they’ve made it. If you are selling lots of complex products, this might not be the perfect tool for you. But, if you’re trying to set up an online shop in an inexpensive, out of the box manner, this is a really great option to get your business off the ground.

What about WooCommerce or Shopify?

WooCommerce is a free plugin for WordPress that allows you to sell products online as well. There’s no transaction fees from WooCommerce at any level, but the setup can be fairly complex, and without the addition of multiple paid add-ons (which can really add up—many of them are $99/year), you will have a very basic shop setup that’s not very customizable without hiring WordPress developers to build out custom functionality.

Shopify is an all-in-one shopping tool. It’s a great e-commerce tool. If your website’s primary goal is selling products, Shopify might be a really great option. It’s a bit more expensive than Squarespace, and it doesn’t include all the site building tools, but it is a fully integrated shopping cart and that is their sole focus. From a user friendliness perspective, you might have an easier time with Shopify if you have complex items for sale (e.g. lots of variations). Where it really shines is that you can use Shopify for in store POS and for your online shop and can track inventory in both locations.
